In 1914, Marcus Garvey founded the UNIA with the aim of bringing together all the people of African descent from across the world. Amy Ashwood, who eventually became his first wife, was one of the co-founders and also served as the organization's first secretary.

 Phillip Murphy is a retired public servant who served as an elected Councillor of Birmingham City Council for twenty years. He was the first and youngest Black Cabinet member of the council. He has an academic background in philosophy, politics, and social sciences and has been involved with community organizations, development, and anti-racism activism for over fifty years. His interests include music, football, literature, and traveling, and he is happily married with three daughters and two grandchildren.
